McMahon Hits Blumenthal In Radio Ad

Politico reports that U.S. senatorial hopeful Linda McMahon is launching a radio spot against Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, the likely Democratic nominee vying for U.S. Senator Chris Dodd’s seat.

“The spot features a man and woman discussing Blumenthal's decision to accept money from political action committees for his Senate campaign. Says the man: ‘Dick Blumenthal, the guy that rejected all special interest money and said he’s never taken PAC money, is now taking special interest PAC money. Over $200,000 of it already.’ The woman replies: ‘You know, every day Dick Blumenthal sounds more and more like a career politician.’ The narrator jumps in: ‘Dick Blumenthal must think Washington can never have enough career politicians that say one thing then do another.’ And scene.
Blumenthal, the perennial favorite among Democrats for governor or U.S. senator for nearly as long as he has been attorney general, surprised no one when he leapt into the breech soon to be left vacant by Dodd.

In a debate with Democrat Merrick Alpert, Blumenthal appeared to show a few rust spots in his delivery. Asked by Alpert how his many suits brought against Connecticut businesses helped to generate jobs by leveling the playing field.

Attacking Blumenthal just before the Republican nominating convention will send a positive signal to delegates who will be asked to choose between McMahon and Rob Simmons, a Republican also vying for the seat.

I heard the commercial this morning, and actually thought that it wasn't as strong as it could have been. Most people don't know what the hell a PAC (Political Action Committee) is... particularly the group of people the ad targeted; presumably people who aren't political insiders/junkies and are sick of "business as usual." If I was writing the script, I would have cut out the "PAC" references and just kept the "special interest" stuff. The point I just made may sound nit picky, but overall there was nothing that stood out about the ad. It sounded like something a campaign gofer could have come up with. (If it was my money, I would have done something telling the sob story about that tech sales woman who's business the AG's office ruined).

To be quite honest, I'm a little bit disturbed by the way Linda has spent money, and I think it says a lot about what sort of a Senator she would be. It's almost like greenbacks holds no value to her. The pick of Dave Cappiello as her campaign manager was interesting to say the least. Dave is a nice guy, but has no experience winning campaigns for national office (having just lost one himself). She should have been able to secure his services for much less than she did. Is negotiation a foreign concept for her? And the space that she has rented for her campaign headquarters is just obscene, in some of the most expensive retail space in Connecticut.

I know that some of this stuff is done to make a statement to other candidates about what she is willing to spend. But more discretion should be exercised. It demonstrates a disconnect with reality. If Linda is willing to throw HER OWN money around with such reckless abandon, I would hate to think what she will be willing to do with taxpayer money.

I love the radio add. Isn't Pete Schiff running? I hope the GOP is giving Mr. Schiff serious consideration. I don't know what Ms. McMahon's bona fides are, but Mr. Schiff seems battle tested on the issues.

Me too, Blumenthal has a way of settling cases of this kind, especially now that the prize is within his grasp. The $18 million has stuck in his throat on that one, and he knows that he can keep the litigatory ball rolling well beyond the November elections.

As a lawyer, you surely know that victims of this kind don’t want to say something publicly that would jeopardize their case.

The whole sad spectacle reminds me of the influence exerted by the Mafia over their victims. Justice is the first to flee the scene of such crimes against justice. And the news media, I can assure you, is sound asleep.

I hadn't actually heard the commericial; mine was just a notice that it would be airing soon.

Greg,

As far as I know, Schiff is arranging a primary.

Fuzzy,

Much of McMahon’s money has been well spent. She’s very bright and a quick learner.

Consider: The following devastating editorial appeared in the Waterbury Republican American on May 14th: http://www.rep-am.com/articles/2010/05/14/opinion/483037.txt

On May 14th, same day, the following notice appeared in my e-mail: http://www.linda2010.com/news/2010/05/in-case-you-missed-it-pac-man/

Not bad.

And I’m really a bit player in all this.

The Democrats have over-estimated Blumenthal and underestimated McMahon. Her money is not their only problem.
