Connecticut Commentary: Red Notes from a Blue State

As of April 28 th , U.S. Senator Dick Blumenthal has not yet endorsed likely Democrat Party presidential nominee Joe Biden. Blumenthal’s continued non-endorsement cannot be the result of an oversight. Most prominent Democrats, even those engaged in the Democrat primary – including Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Vermont socialist Senator Bernie Sanders – have offered their heartfelt endorsements. Former President Barack Obama, after a little hectoring from big wigs in his own party, has issued a late but fulsome endorsement. No one seems to know for certain what may be holding up the Blumenthal endorsement, but theories are making the rounds.

April 24 fell a month and a few days after Governor Ned Lamont, perhaps in consultation with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, announced on March 20 that many businesses in Connecticut would be shuttered owing to the onset of Coronavirus. To people whose stricken relatives abide in Connecticut nursing homes, that month must seem like an eternity.

National Democrats have larded with ideological pork a massive $1.8 trillion dollar rescue plan brought forth to mitigate Coronavirus, stopping in its tracks a bill designed to stop the pandemic in its tracks. “The Senate bill that Democrats stopped,” the New York Post notes, “would have given nearly every American $1,200, with $500 for every child. It would have allocated $250 billion for unemployment insurance, $350 for a small business loan program, more than $100 billion to hospitals, $11 billion towards vaccines, $4.5 more to the CDC, $20 billion to veterans’ healthcare, $12 billion for public education, another $10 billion to airports, and $5 billion to FEMA.”

Schumer at the Supreme Court Even the universe has borders and limits, both perhaps undiscoverable; so we are told by science. The big bang theory has not only a beginning but an end. Chuck Schumer of New York and Dick Blumenthal of Connecticut are two U.S. Senators who fervently believe that abortion should be borderless, not hemmed in by reasonable regulations, such as those that they believe should govern the exercise of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Laws are limits to human behavior which, we deduce from bank robberies, rapes and murders, may be overridden in some ungovernable people. The law is a red line saying thus far you may go but no further -- without risking some painful sanction. Blumenthal knows, perhaps better than most, that one way to set limits to the sometimes audacious behavior of businesses is through the establishment of regulations. The unfortunately named Fredric Dicker , a scrivener who writes for the authoritative New York Post is asserting in his column that “ Despite claims that he's still undecided, Gov. Paterson is ‘certain’ to pick Caroline Kennedy to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton in the US Senate, several unhappy contenders for the job have told friends and associates in recent days. ‘ Why so? Morose contenders, says Dicker, “based their conclusion on the view that Paterson, after nearly two months of indecision, would ‘greatly embarrass’ and 'entirely humiliate' Kennedy, anger her prominent political family and even offend President-elect Barack Obama by picking someone other than President John F. Readers will wait in vain for respectable media outlets – The New York Times, Al Jezeera – to call by their right names the Jew hating terrorists who first tortured and mutilated their victims before assassinating them. Both Al Jezzera and the Guardian, a left leaning British paper, characterize the terrorists as “gunmen.” CNN, an outpost of the Obama administration, calls them "militants." Though it’s amusing to discover that former President Bill Clinton and the present occupant of that office, George Bush, feel similarly – for different reasons – about Dubai and the United Arab Emirates, last week provided an Oops! moment for Hillary Clinton, the former president’s ambitious wife.
