Blumenthal Agonistes And The Flawed Deal With Iran

The cunning, canned response issuing from the seven Democratic members of Connecticut’s U.S. Congressional Delegation is:  The Obama/Kerry/Khamenei deal may be flawed, but there is no better alternative.

The acknowledgment of “flaws” in the deal concocted by President Barack Obama, Secretary of State John Kerry and Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei, the ostensible purpose of which is to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear device, is a campaign breastplate. No one among Connecticut’s all Democratic U.S.Congressional Delegation has unreservedly embraced the “flawed” deal. Never-the-less, they will vote for the deal, flaws and all, for the greater glory of their President and party. Among lockstep Democrats in the Northeast, Senator Schumer of New York stands out as a notable exception. If the deal should in the future give birth to horrific consequences, those now voting for it may always point to their breastplate reservations.

The answer to the question tormenting Connecticut Congressmen who have signaled their assent to the deal – is a better deal possible? – is no, since a “snap back” of the trade embargo on Iran has been rendered inoperative by the deal, whether or not a majority in the Congress disapproves of it. The deal itself renders moot any measure taken by the United States to prevent a) the flow of funds into Iran from other countries that undoubtedly will be used by an expansionist Iran to consolidate its proxy military victories in the Middle East, b) the near certain development of a nuclear capacity in Iran, which would include the purchase of delivery systems supplied by either Vladimir Putin’s Russia, China or North Korea, nations once considered unfriendly and antagonistic to the United States, c) the rise of Iran as a  determining force in the Middle East, and d) the international humiliation of Islam’s once and future “Great Satan,” represented on the international stage by Mr. Obama and his “Winter Soldier,” Secretary of State John Kerry.

The enduring struggle in the Middle East – Salifists call it a jihad – is a hot war with militant Islam. And in a hot war, if you are not winning, you are losing. The deal with Iran brokered by the United States is a great victory for Iran, not among the traditional allies of the United States. Beleaguered Israel, a small democracy lost in a sea of murderous opponents, all of them supported by Islamic militants, is a traditional ally of the United States. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned the U. S. Congress, Senator Blumenthal in attendance, that the deal – no one dares call it a treaty – should have been re-calibrated BEFORE Western sanctions against Iran had been withdrawn. Even allowing that Mr. Netanyahu’s pleadings were the cries of a mouse in the lion’s mouth, he was and is right. Mr. Netanyahu very well may be the Cassandra of Obama’s New World Order.

Mr. Blumenthal recently told a Hartford newspaper editorial board that he was “wrestling with what happens here… and what the consequences are, and what the costs are.” The Senator said he has two objectives: to “stop  a nuclear armed Iran, which I think would be tremendously perilous for our nation and our allies… but I also want to keep this country out of war and stop the spread of armed conflict in the Middle East. So those are the kinds of issues that are concerning me."

In a post deal universe -- whether or not the U.S. Congress summons sufficient votes to override an expected veto – Mr. Blumenthal’s laudable goals have become irreconcilable. Within the questionable parameters of the deal, Iran WILL develop a nuclear capacity in the near future. That eventuality already is a given in Saudi Arabia, which is attempting to purchase nuclear capabilities from Putin’s Russia. Unlike Mr. Obama, Mr. Putin is not accustomed to leading from behind. And once the Western money tap is open, Iran also will be able to make similar purchases.

The choice now facing Mr. Blumenthal is not war or peace, but victory – which cannot be accomplished without American force – or defeat. Accepting the latter, he also will be complicit in the destruction of Israel, the extirpation of Christians in Islam’s new Caliphate, the evisceration of NATO, and the Russianification  of much of what we used to call “the free world,” which is now dependent on Putin’s gas lines, not to mention his New World Order.

Mr. Blumenthal’s compatriot in New York, Senator Chuck Schumer, already has given the deal thumbs down. Some political watchers in Connecticut suppose Mr. Blumenthal may be waiting for an accurate vote count in the Senate, which will allow him to safely vote against the deal if may pass a veto override hurdle. But who knows – Mr. Blumenthal may discover his spine before then and vote against a bad deal for the right reasons. The God of Abraham and Jesus sometimes works in mysterious ways.

The PURA soap opera continues in Connecticut: Business eyeing the exit signs

The trouble at PURA and the two energy companies it oversees began – ages ago, it now seems – with the elevation of Marissa Gillett to the chairpersonship of Connecticut’s Public Utilities Regulation Authority.   Connecticut Commentary has previously weighed in on the controversy: PURA Pulls The Plug on November 20, 2019; The High Cost of Energy, Three Strikes and You’re Out? on December 21, 2024; PURA Head Butts the Economic Marketplace on January 3, 2025; Lamont Surprised at Suit Brought Against PURA on February 3, 2025; and Lamont’s Pillow Talk on February 22, 2025:   The melodrama full of pratfalls continues to unfold awkwardly.   It should come as no surprise that Gillett has changed the nature and practice of the state agency. She has targeted two of Connecticut’s energy facilitators – Eversource and Avangrid -- as having in the past overcharged the state for services rendered. Thanks to the Democrat controlled General Assembly, Connecticut is no l...

The Murphy Thingy

It’s the New York Post , and so there are pictures. One shows Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy canoodling with “Courier Newsroom publisher Tara McGowan, 39, last Monday by the bar at the Red Hen, located just one mile north of Capitol Hill.”   The canoodle occurred one day or night prior to Murphy’s well-advertised absence from President Donald Trump’s recent Joint Address to Congress.   Murphy has said attendance at what was essentially a “campaign rally” involving the whole U.S. Congress – though Democrat congresspersons signaled their displeasure at the event by stonily sitting on their hands during the applause lines – was inconsistent with his dignity as a significant part of the permanent opposition to Trump.   Reaching for his moral Glock Murphy recently told the Hartford Courant that Democrat Party opposition to President Donald Trump should be unrelenting and unforgiving: “I think people won’t trust you if you run a campaign saying that if Donald Trump is ...

Lamont Surprised at Suit Brought Against PURA

Marissa P. Gillett, the state's chief utility regulator, watches Gov. Ned Lamont field questions about a new approach to regulation in April 2023. Credit: MARK PAZNIOKAS / CTMIRROR.ORG Concerning a suit brought by Eversource and Avangrid, Connecticut’s energy delivery agents, against Connecticut’s Public Utility Regulatory Agency (PURA), Governor Ned Lamont surprised most of the state’s political watchers by affecting surprise.   “Look,” Lamont told a Hartford Courant reporter shortly after the suit was filed, “I think it is incredibly unhelpful,” Lamont said. “Everyone is getting mad at the umpires.   Eversource is not getting everything they want and they are bringing suit. It was a surprise to me. Nobody notified me. I think we have to do a better job of working together.”   Lamont’s claim is far less plausible than the legal claim made by Eversource and Avangrid. The contretemps between Connecticut’s energy distributors and Marissa Gillett , Gov. Ned Lamont’s ...
