Cranky Democrats

Sometime after Democratic gubernatorial candidate Lee Whitnum was dragged from a debate stage in Brookfield and arrested – apparently for being Lee Whitnum – Connecticut Democratic Party Chair Nick Balletto issued the following directive to Fox News: “We’re a big tent party, we invite people from all walks of life to participate in our Party and the electoral process. But based on Lee Whitnum’s behavior tonight, and based on her behavior in the past, it’s clear that Lee Whitnum should not hold elected office and does not represent the Democratic Party, nor should she participate in Party functions at the local or statewide level.”

There will be multiple versions of the event, Whitnum’s and everyone else's. Going forward, the standard among gubernatorial Democrats for dealing with disgruntled declared candidates for governor appears to be -- call the cops. The "big tent" party of law and order is on the prowl, and Brookfield obviously is not a sanctuary town in which police officers are cautioned to wink at lawbreakers. This change, prompted by Whitnum, is highly unusual for Democrats, who generally tolerate political disruptors such as Antifa anarchists, the more absurd of the second wave feminists, and pretty much anyone who would support actions leading to the impeachment of the present White House disturber, Donald Trump.

Whitnum previously had been invited to a forum in Glastonbury sponsored by Manchester, East Hartford and South Windsor Democrats. Chairman of Glastonbury’s Democratic town committee Charles Murray, harkening back to a standard now abandoned by party chieftain Balletto, said that Whitnum had been invited to his truly big tent forum, because Glastonbury traditionally had invited every candidate running for governor -- including Republicans. It was the first gubernatorial debate in their area and Glastonbury Democrats wanted to be fair.

Alfonso Robinson, who styles himself “a progressive who did not vote for Joe Lieberman,” was on the scene and recorded the event for posterity. His video shows gubernatorial debate candidates -- Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin, Susan Bysiewicz, Sean Connolly, Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim, Jonathan Harris, Ned Lamont and Guy Smith – leaving the scene en masse, after which two police officers arrive to remonstrate with Whitnum.  Harkening back to a standard now abandoned,  Murray said, “If you don’t include everybody then you have to decide who’s not going to come. I’ve spoken to [Lee Whitnum] a number of times and I think if she was more moderate, she’d get her message across.”

"I am a Democratic candidate and I have every right to be in this debate, how dare you?" Whitnum is heard saying to someone off stage. I have worked very hard, how dare you?"

Clinging to the table, Whitnum protests that she is a lawfully declared candidate for governor. Her hands are pried loose from the debate table by two officers, she drops to the floor and her limp body is dragged stage left behind some curtains.

News reports of the incident have noted Whitnum’s past offenses. In a primary contest, Whitnum said of U.S. Senator Chris Murphy, “I’m dealing with a whore here who sells his soul to AIPAC, who will say anything for the job.” Prickly on the matter of Israel and AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, Whitnum said that anti-American sentiment everywhere in the world could be mitigated if the federal government were to prosecute American settlers who “go to Israel and maim or kill in the Promised Land.” She ended her blustering by calling for the elimination of U.S. aid to Israel. Whitnum was not arrested on this occasion.

Fox News  reported, “Whitnum has also been arrested and convicted of breach of peace for an incident at Stamford’s Law Library.’ On that occasion, she ran afoul of the Law Librarian and was asked to leave. This she refused to do, marshals were summoned who attempted to escort her from the library. She resisted, they insisted, and she allegedly bit the hand of a marshal, ignoring the age old dictum: Never bite the hand that arrests you. She also once filed a slander lawsuit against Gov. Dannel Malloy after the governor, stumping for U.R. Representative Jim Himes, declared that statements made by Whitnum were anti-Semitic and anti-Israel.

Anti-Semitism, it is true, is on the rise. David Horowitz’s Frontpage reminds us that Anti-Semitism is very much alive on college campuses. In the ivied halls of academe, Anti-Semitism is principally a leftist effusion. In a stunning report replete with Anti-Semitic references – “@DictatorHitler: How many Jews died in the Holocaust? Not enough’ @PrincessLulllu @thearabgirl HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHHAHAHAHA” -- and featuring pro-terrorists professors and students – “Numerous former presidents and officers of the Muslim Students Association have gone on to high level terrorist careers with al-Qaeda and other jihadist organizations. The most famous, Anwar al-Awlaki was president of the Muslim Students Association chapter at Colorado State University and went on to become the head of al-Qaeda in Yemen until he was killed by an American drone strike” – Horowitz’s Frontpage opens a window on REAL Anti-Semitism on college campuses.

Perhaps for political reasons – Howowitz is a repentant 60’s radical -- U.S. Senator Dick Blumenthal has characterized Horowitz and his associates a hate group.

It may be gratifying to some Democrats to realize that their party is willing to enforce permissible red lines. Whitnum NO, Blumenthal – who seems to have a problem distinguishing the friends of Israel from those in The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) who wish to drive Israel into the sea – YES.
